What you'll do each day

  1. Day 1: Get your EIN and register with Utah. Get a free EIN from the IRS, then open your Utah withholding account on Taxpayer Access Point (TAP).
  2. Day 2: Register for Utah unemployment insurance. Register with the Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS) and get your account number and new-employer rate.
  3. Day 3: Workers' comp and posters. Buy a workers' comp policy before your hire's first day, and put up the required state and federal posters.
  4. Day 4: Hiring paperwork: I-9, W-4, and new-hire reporting. Complete the I-9 on time, collect a W-4, and report the hire to Utah within 20 days.
  5. Day 5: Set up payroll and your deadlines. Pick a payroll method, know what to withhold and pay, and put every due date on your calendar.
